Circulation Policies

Borrowing Reserve Materials

A Student ID or validated library card is required to check out Reserve material.

You may obtain the call number for an item by searching the Reserves Course Catalog by instructor or course. Most Reserve items can also be searched in the Harvest catalog.

Reserve material check out is for limited loan periods, to ensure the greatest access.

Hourly Loans:
Item is due 1, 2 or 4 hours from the time checked out. Course Reserve material may be checked out overnight, due one hour after opening the next morning. Permanent Reserve material is due before closing that same day.
Daily Loans:
Item is due 1, 3 or 7 days following check out.
Multiple Week Loans:
Item is due 2 or 8 weeks following check out. These loan periods apply to College or Permanent Reserve materials only.

Renewing Reserve Materials

Online renewals are not available for Reserve materials.

Hourly Loans must be renewed in-person at the Reserves Desk. Daily and Multiple Week Loans may be renewed by telephone (Carlson Health Sciences Library: (530) 752‑8041; Blaisdell Medical Library: (916) 734‑3529).

Hourly Loans:
May be renewed twice, assuming that there are no holds placed on the item. Renewals must be requested before the item is due.
Daily Loans:
May be renewed twice, assuming that there are no holds placed on the item. Renewals must be requested before the item is due.
Multiple Week Loans:
May be renewed twice, assuming that there are no holds placed on the item. College Reserve materials may not be renewed.

Items with holds on them may not be renewed.

Returning a Reserve Item

Reserve items must be returned directly to the Reserve Desk from which they were borrowed. Reserve items are considered still outstanding and will accrue overdue fines until they are checked-in at the appropriate Reserve Desk. Reserve items should never be returned to any on-campus book drop or to a branch other than that from which the item was borrowed.

Holds

A hold may be placed on an item only if it is checked out to another borrower. Holds are not accepted over the telephone. Holds are not permitted on College Reserve items.

Hourly Loans:
Held for one-half hour after returned.
Daily Loans:
Held last hour before closing on the day the item is due and the first hour after opening on the following day.
Multiple Week Loans:
Held for one week following return of the item. College Reserve materials may not be held.

Fine Rates and Replacement Billing

Reserve materials accrue overdue fines if not returned on time. Replacement billing of these items is also accelerated and is in addition to any overdue fines that may be assessed.

Hourly Loans:
$2.00 for each hour or portion thereof overdue for the hours that Reserves is open, with a maximum fine of $50.00 per item. These items are heavily used and must be returned promptly to allow other students to check them out.
Daily Loans:
$2.00 for the first hour or portion thereof, after which fines accrue at $1.00 for each hour or portion thereof up to a maximum of $6.00 the first day. After that, fines accrue at $4.00 per day, with a maximum fine of $50.00 per item.
Multiple Week Loans:
$4.00 for each day or portion thereof overdue for the days that Reserves is open, with a maximum fine of $50.00 per item.
